What does the
edema therapist do?

The edema therapist treats patients with (lymph)edema, which causes abnormal fluid retention. Common symptoms include pain, feeling tired, and difficulty moving. With special treatment, the edema therapist stimulates drainage of the accumulated fluid.

How does edema develop

There are several causes. The lymphatic system may be damaged by (breast) cancer, blood vessel problems, or scars. Radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, and an accident can also lead to edema.

Treatments

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a massage technique that promotes the drainage of the lymph. Breathing exercises, exercise therapy, lymph taping, and compression of the edema can also help. Venous edemas can be bandaged or treated with tailored, therapeutic compression stockings.
